Fruit cultivation has suffered tens of millions of euro damage as a result of severe cold this Winter. Almost all over the Netherlands there is damage. The damage is most severe in Flevoland and North Holland, in the north of the country. Also parts of Utrecht and North Brabant further south have been hit hard. Pears have been especially damaged, but other fruit as well.

Tens of thousands of homes have been left without power and thousands of drivers experienced long delays as snow, ice and strong winds hit the North East.

The wintry weather has brought down hundreds of power cables across northern England since the bad weather arrived on Tuesday afternoon, affecting around 90,000 homes.

Between six and eight inches of snow fell in high parts of the Peak District, Pennines and Cumbria overnight, as blizzard conditions spread south from Scotland.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the government to start preparing emergency aid for Tajikistan to help tackle the aftermath of an unusually cold and long winter, his web site said on Friday.

Earlier in the day, Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon requested aid at a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Putin “pledged that emergency humanitarian assistance will be rendered as soon as possible,” his website said.

Many roads and bridges were also damaged or destroyed as a result of a long spell of cold weather.
