WINTER took an icy grip on the country at the weekend and the authorities cautioned against extreme weather conditions.
Yesterday the Weather Service in Eastern Cape warned of intense cold, with snowfalls and rough seas, and gales.
Warnings were also issued for the Free State, where very cold conditions are expected, and in Western Cape, which will also experience rough seas.
At least three people have been reported killed, and more than 170 made homeless as a result of fires as people tried to keep themselves warm in temperatures that plummeted to -1C in Gauteng at the weekend.
