…The prevailing cold sets winter 08/09 apart from the two preceding winters. It wasn’t remarkably cold but temperatures remained largely below average from December through to the end of February. The cold meant the snow base was preserved until the very end of the season and that conditions were excellent even at mid-mountain level. Record breaking snow depths were recorded all season, particularly in resorts on the Franco-Italian border such as Isola and Montgenevre…

A rare, heavy snowfall in central Spain closed Madrid’s airport and paralysed traffic in the city and several German rivers were frozen over as much of Europe remained in the grip of Siberian conditions on Friday.
The bitter cold which has embraced the much of the continent since the end of last year comes amid Russian gas cuts to several European countries.
But not everyone was unhappy about the cold snap, as people in the Netherlands rediscovered the pleasures of skating along the iced-over canals.

The day the sea froze (and the cold shut down an ice cream factory)
http://www.mirror.co.uk
8/01/2009
It’s not often you can take your dogs for a walk on the sea…
But things got so cold yesterday that this stretch of coastline at Sandbanks in Poole, Dorset, froze over as the big chill refused to loosen its grip on Britain.
Locals said it was the first time it had happened since 1963, although there was a partial freezing of the sea in 1991.
Temperatures plummet to almost – 12 in some parts of the country making it chillier than Iceland and Greenland, and bringing with it the usual chaos on roads as cars crashed on the ice or broke down.
And the freezing weather claimed its oddest victim yet when an factory in Dartmoor, Devon, had to stop making ice cream – because it was too cold.
