A bitter cold spell in Russia has claimed 123 lives in the past 10 days, an official says, with the unseasonably early freeze testing authorities in a country used to notoriously tough winters.
Temperatures have plunged to around minus 30 degrees Celsius in the Moscow region and minus 60 degrees in Eastern Siberia, as part of a winter being described by local media as the coldest in 70 years.
“Since the start of the cold, 123 people have died of exposure and frostbite,” a medical source was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the government to start preparing emergency aid for Tajikistan to help tackle the aftermath of an unusually cold and long winter, his web site said on Friday.
Earlier in the day, Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon requested aid at a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Putin “pledged that emergency humanitarian assistance will be rendered as soon as possible,” his website said.
Many roads and bridges were also damaged or destroyed as a result of a long spell of cold weather.

Russian agricultural officials say the abnormally cold temperatures are certain to have an adverse effect on this year’s harvest.
In Saratov Kray, where temperatures have dropped to as low as -35 Celsius, First Deputy Minister of Agriculture Anatoly Kutsenko said only about half of the country’s grapevines are sheltered by protective earthen barriers.

Thousands of snow-clearing machines have been working to dig the Russian capital Moscow out of a record-breaking fall of 63cm (nearly 25 inches).
After a weekend of heavy snow showers, the regional weather centre announced that the previous record of 62cm, set in 1966, had been broken.
