Britain is braced for blizzards, gales, snow drifts and floods ahead of one of the coldest March weekends in 50 years.
Thousands of gritters and snow ploughs are moving in to keep roads clear while airports in the worst- affected areas have snow-clearing teams on standby.
Heavy rain lashed the south-west last night as the Met Office issued an amber alert, warning of flooding and travel disruption.

With bitterly cold weather setting in across Britain, the Cossack hat is shaping up as winter 2012’s high street fashion hit. The style made glamorous by Julie Christie in Doctor Zhivago, and more recently by Keira Knightley in Anna Karenina, is doing swift trade across the UK.
John Lewis says sales are up 36% year-on-year, and 320% in the last three weeks as temperatures have plummeted.

After a mini heatwave and the wettest April on record, now parts of Britain are braced for a taste of some wintry weather.
Forecasters say it will be turning much colder as we head towards the weekend, with some areas seeing unseasonable frost and sub-zero temperatures.
Sky weather presenter Nazaneen Ghaffar said: “It’s all thanks to a cold front slowly moving southwards across the UK on Friday. This will bring with it colder air into northern areas.

Much of Britain suffered the coldest summer for almost two decades, Met Office statistics show.
As Britons return to work today after a soggy Bank Holiday weekend, official weather data reveals that average temperatures were significantly down on recent years.
The UK’s average temperature from June 1 to August 15 was only 57F (13.9C) – the lowest for 13 years.

Nearly 300 more people a day died when freezing temperatures hit at the start of this month, new figures show.
A total of 11,193 deaths were registered in England and Wales between December 3 and 10, the Office for National Statistics has revealed.
