HOSPITALS are on standby for a busy few days as the start of the new year brings plummeting temperatures.
Revellers planning a night out to see in the New Year this evening will have to contend with freezing temperatures as they make their way home in the early hours.
The Met Office has said the chilly conditions seen over the past few days are set to continue into the weekend, meaning a chilly start to 2009.

Arctic winds, snow and frosts have come in such a blast this winter that the bookmakers report record numbers of bets on a white Christmas so early in December. The Met Office has issued a blizzard of severe weather warnings, telling us to wrap up warm, take care on the roads, generally scaring the living daylights out of everyone about the perils of cold.

A COLD weather health warning has been issued for the north west with temperatures as low as -8C (18F) on Saturday.
Heavy fog could make driving difficult and sleet and snow will fall on the Pennines and moors over the weekend.
The Met Office and Department of Health have warned of the devastating effects of such a cold spell – even for those who stay indoors. Elderly and vulnerable people could suffer heart attacks, strokes and pneumonia as a result of freezing conditions, they warned.

Heavy snow and freezing gales are forecast to hit the UK this weekend as the country gets a blast of Arctic weather.
Blizzards are predicted for Scotland and most of the eastern coast of England, where temperatures could drop as low as -5C.
The Met Office is warning of heavy snow showers and biting winds of up to 70mph in exposed coastal and hilly areas.
