The mercury in Canberra plummeted to 0.3 of a degree overnight – the coldest December minimum on record.
The unseasonably chilly temperature was recorded at 5.44am, and by 6.45am the mercury was still only sitting at four degrees.
A duty forecaster from the Canberra office of the Bureau of Meteorology said the minimum this morning was the coldest Canberra has experienced in 75 years of records.

Brutal sea ice conditions that northwest Alaska battled all winter haven’t receded in parts of northern Canada. Two resupply ships are stuck waiting at the mouth of Frobisher Bay in Iqaluit because of tough ice conditions.

Record low temperatures were shattered in Orlando and Daytona Beach overnight after a cool front moved through the area.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne the temperature dipped to 64 degrees at Orlando International Airport, shattering the previous record of 66 set in 1920.

It’s been a summer of cold temperatures, water spouts and lack of sunshine.
Now new Niwa figures back up what everyone already knows – Auckland’s summer was one of the worst on records.

The figures also show December 18 was also among the coolest on record.The 14.9C recorded in Whangaparoa that day was the second lowest recorded on December 18 since 1982 while the 15.1C in Whenuapai was the coldest since 1951.
It was 15.5C in Henderson – the second-lowest since 1971 and 15.4C in Auckland central – the third lowest temperature on that day since 1961…

WESTERN Sydney is experiencing its coldest summer on record thanks to cloud and rain associated with the La Nina weather cycle.
Tom Saunders, senior meteorologist at The Weather Channel, said Penrith had experienced average maximum temperatures of 26.2C, while Parramatta recorded an average of 24.6C.
Blacktown hit an average 25C.
Meanwhile, Sydney was only able to record an average 24.6C, putting it on track for the coldest summer since 1953.
