Arctic temperatures plunged many parts of Finland into a winter deep freeze Thursday night. However the all-time cold record for the season still stands at -34.7 degrees Celsius, set in Kiutaköngäs, Kuusamo in December.

Thursday night’s extreme cold set new temperature records across Finland. According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute record low temperatures were recorded in Uusimaa, southern Karelia and the Häme region.

Heavy snow that blanketed eastern Japan over the holiday weekend left one man dead and 900 others injured, as Tokyo commuters took to the slippery streets on Tuesday.

A low-pressure system, dubbed a “bomb cyclone” by local press, dumped 8cm of snow in nine hours, the heaviest snowfall in the region since January 2006, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. It left 13cm of snow in neighbouring Yokohama, while mountainous areas around Tokyo saw up to 30cm.

BEIRUT: Snow blanketed much of Lebanon Thursday after a fierce overnight snowstorm, with many people trapped in remote villages by blizzards.

Snow settled on the Lebanese coast, in north and south, in a rare appearance in over a decade as the country experienced record low temperatures.

Meteorologists agree: January is on track to be one of the most frigid months on record in Alaska history, according to the National Weather Service.
