CLEVELAND, Ohio — Record or near-record cold swept much of the middle part of the nation in July — with some records being broken from the 1860s — but a late-month rally in Northeast Ohio left the area barely in the top 20 for coldest July on record.Other areas — from Cincinnati to Madison, Wisc. — broke cold records and even Ohio cities such as Akron, Toledo, Youngstown, Columbus and Dayton came close to their historic marks.

…Temperatures have been well below normal. Sunshine often has been in short supply and rain has fallen at inopportune times. It’s resulted in crops ripening slowly and some tourist havens — already dealing with a sour economy — taking an extra hit…

WASHINGTON — A record cold snap gripped the American Midwest Friday as temperatures plummeted to lows of minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 34 degrees Celsius) and officials scrambled to protect the homeless and vulnerable.
