A major snowstorm slammed the East Coast and snarled the busy holiday travel season Saturday as airports shut down runways, rail service slowed and bus routes were suspended on the last weekend before Christmas.
Record snowfall totals were reported Saturday afternoon at Washington Dulles and Reagan National airports — and snow was still falling. Accumulation at Dulles reached 16 inches, breaking the old record of 10.6 inches set December, 12, 1964; 13.3 inches was reported at Reagan. The old record there was 11.5 inches set December 17, 1932.

We’ve been flirting with record lows for days now, and today we managed to break one. The unofficial low this morning was 49 at Westover ARB in Chicopee, breaking the previous record of 54 that had been set in 1990. It’s worthwhile to note that 54 was the highest record low on the books in July, but even still it’s been unusually cool.

As you are well aware, June was unseasonably cold. The mean temperature for June was 63.3°F, which ties it with June 1982 as the sixth coldest June on record in Boston since records began in 1872.

CHICOPEE – More than $900,000 was spent for snow removal and related costs over the 2008-2009 winter, the largest amount ever spent by the Department of Public Works in this category.
“It was the highest amount we have ever had,” said Assistant Department of Public Works Robert Andersen.After an unusually long and snowy winter that saw 71 inches of snow, Andersen said costs kept climbing stremming from rising transportation and fuel costs.

CHICOPEE – The plunging mercury made for record-breaking cold this morning at Westover Air Reserve base.
“Shattered it,” abc40 meteorologist Eric Fisher said of Westover’s former record of 9 below posted for this date. Westover logged 16 below at 7 a.m., Fisher said.
