High Hopes for First Dutch Skating Marathon in 15 Years

The historic Elfstedentocht marathon may finally take place again in the Netherlands this year, according to Reuters. The marathon has not taken place since 1997, but temperatures may finally be cold enough for skaters to take to the ice once more.

The marathon takes ice skaters through 11 Dutch cities and 200 kilometers (or 124 miles) of frozen canals. The skate has only happened 15 times since the 1909 inaugural race.

Cold, blustery weather is blowing into much of Ontario and Quebec, leaving behind frigid temperatures that have shattered records across Alberta.

On Wednesday, dozens of communities across the province were hit with temperatures below –30 C, and 13 of them were hit with record lows. In the town of Hendrickson Creek, Alta., it was a bone-chilling –41.4.

CHICOPEE – The plunging mercury made for record-breaking cold this morning at Westover Air Reserve base.

“Shattered it,” abc40 meteorologist Eric Fisher said of Westover’s former record of 9 below posted for this date. Westover logged 16 below at 7 a.m., Fisher said.
