Some of us just had our coldest August night on record. Temperatures fell into single figures for most of the UK – low enough for a touch of ground frost in rural spots this morning.

THE inner west has shivered through its coldest summer for 52 years. The overall average temperature for the region was 20.8C – 1.5C below the long-term average of 22.3C.

WESTERN Sydney is experiencing its coldest summer on record thanks to cloud and rain associated with the La Nina weather cycle.
Tom Saunders, senior meteorologist at The Weather Channel, said Penrith had experienced average maximum temperatures of 26.2C, while Parramatta recorded an average of 24.6C.
Blacktown hit an average 25C.
Meanwhile, Sydney was only able to record an average 24.6C, putting it on track for the coldest summer since 1953.

Sydney has just ended its longest summer spell below 30 degrees in 15 years, weatherzone.com.au reports.
After a 60-day break, Sydney has finally reached 30 degrees, ending the longest summer run below 30 since 1996/97. In that summer there were 61 consecutive days below 30 degrees.
The record number of consecutive summer days below 30 degrees is 90, set in 1952/53. During that summer, not one day reached 30 degrees.

RETAILERS preparing for the last-minute Christmas rush are expecting stronger sales than last year but recent chilly weather could see clothing stores miss out on the spree.
The unusually cold start to summer across the country, including Sydney’s coldest start to the season in half a century, is hurting clothing and shoe sales, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) said.

Much of Britain suffered the coldest summer for almost two decades, Met Office statistics show.
As Britons return to work today after a soggy Bank Holiday weekend, official weather data reveals that average temperatures were significantly down on recent years.
The UK’s average temperature from June 1 to August 15 was only 57F (13.9C) – the lowest for 13 years.
