…Forecasters said many towns recorded below average temperatures last night, particularly in the north-east, while the frost threatened to damage crops.
Mount Baw Baw dipped to minus 6 degrees, while Mount Hotham, Omeo and Rutherglen reached minus 5 degrees, Mr Efron said.
Wangaratta recorded its lowest temperature for five years, falling to minus 4.6 degrees, and Redesdale, near Castlemaine, shivered through its coldest morning in six years, with minus 3.7 degrees, Weatherzone said.
Melbourne recorded a minimum temperature of 4.7 degrees — two degrees below average — at 12.15am…

…”Early snow is always exciting to see and it gets everyone into thinking about the season ahead,” said Laurie Blampied, general manager of Buller Ski Lifts.
He said that although snow was not unusual for April, 10 centimetres was a “significant amount for this time of year”.
“It’s still two months until the official opening of the snow season but we love to see the temperatures dropping and snow coming to the mountain.”…

VICTORIANS have been warned to brace for a springtime cold snap, with freak conditions to bring rain and snow.
The Bureau of Meteorology predicts temperatures will drop to the low teens tomorrow and Wednesday as a front blows in from southwestern Tasmania.
“We will have a couple of days where we will struggle to get above the low to mid teens and there will be snow down to 600 or 800 metres,” forecaster Peter Newham said.
He said heavy snow in early spring had been rare in the past 50 years.

…In New South Wales, minimums tended four to eight degrees below average across the southern inland in particular. Goulburn Airport fell to minus seven, eight below average and their coldest August night in six years. Thredbo’s minus nine, six below average, was their coldest in a month.
In Victoria, the inland froze as the mercury fell to seven below average. Mildura hit minus one, their coldest August night in 10 years. Tatura’s minus three, their coldest in 12 years for August, was remarkable after an unusually warm 11 degrees the previous night.
