A white Christmas may be a safe bet this year as another cold winter with plenty of snow being predicted by forecasters.

Last winter was Northern Ireland’s worst in a century with record freezing temperatures, but an alert has been issued that this year could be even worse.

The blustery winds and falling leaves in early September have signalled the end of what was the coldest summer in two decades.

Now weather forecasters are predicting a brief autumn before we embark on another severe winter, with the first snow predicted to fall as early as October.

The county usually supplies about 70% of the UK’s crop from March to May, but many growers have lost up to 80% of their harvest.

Record-setting cold and snow has been blamed as contributor to a slide in the U.K. economic output during the fourth quarter of 2010.

The nation’s gross domestic product fell 0.5 percent according to the U.K. Office for National Statistics, it was reported on Tuesday.

Traditional family walks to help the turkey go down were mostly off the cards today as Britain endured its coldest Christmas Day in living memory.

The mercury plummeted to -5.9C at Glenlivet in 1996, but that record was smashed last night when temperatures dropped to -17C at Worcester and -18C at Altnaharra in northern Scotland.

The Army was called in today to help clear away ice and snow as Britain headed towards its coldest December for 100 years.

As temperatures plunged to -15c (5f) David Cameron ordered the military to step in and help the UK’s beleaguered local councils.

Last night saw November minimum temperature records fall across the country. Most notably both Wales and Northern Ireland recorded the coldest November night since records began. In Wales, temperatures fell to -18.0 °C at Llysdinam, near Llandrindod Wells, Powys. Northern Ireland recorded -9.5 °C at Loch Fea.

Scotland recorded minimum temperature of -15.3 °C at Loch Glascarnoch, whilst England recorded -13.5 °C at Topcliffe in North Yorkshire.

The UK’s lowest ever recorded temperature in November was -23.3 °C recorded in Braemar, in the Scottish Highlands, on 14 November 1919.

The UK has just endured its coldest August for 17 years, which was marked, say forecasters, by a complete absence of ‘hot days’.

The month also saw the lowest single-day August temperature for 23 years, with it falling to 55f (12.8c) in Edgbaston, Birmingham, last Thursday.
