National Climate Summary – May 2009: Early start to winter. Lowest May temperatures ever in many locations and double normal rainfall for most of South Island
….
TEMPERATURE: LOWEST EVER FOR MAY FOR MANY AREAS, COLDER THAN NORMAL FOR ALL
The national average temperature of 9.0 °C for May 2009 was 1.6 °C below average for this time of the year. Temperatures were below average (by between 2.0 and 2.5 °C) over most of the South Island, lower parts of the North Island, King Country, Waikato, Auckland and parts of Northland. Most other locations experienced well below average temperatures (between 1.2 and 2.0 °C lower than normal). Record low May maximum or minimum temperatures were recorded in multiple locations throughout the country.
It disturbs me to see articles on the web describing male polar bears are eating their young because global warming has slowed the formation of sea ice to the point where the bears are starving. Grizzly bears and polar bears have always eaten the young if the cubs are still with their mothers and the males want to mate. It has nothing to do with “Global Warming”. The majority scientific concensus is that their is no human caused “Global Warming” happening. We are still coming out of the tail end of the last ice age. Still, we see second rate politicians (Al Gore, also not a scientist) winning the Nobel Prize for pseudo documentaries that contain more fiction than fact and laws being imposed on everyday citizens because of it. Why should the majority of the population have to continue suffering because of an overly vocal minorities fanatical beliefs? Recycling is bad for the environment as it uses more fossil fuels to process these materials than to manufacture from raw, we also run recycling programs and pickups in addition to regular trash pickups thereby almost doubling the use of fossil fuels in that sector. Yet we continue to run these programs knowing that they are more wasteful than just simply disposing of our trash. A clean, healthy environment is desirable for everyone. Our cleansing efforts should be aimed at large polluting industries, and not making everyday citizens feel guilty for thinking they are the ones polluting the planet. As someone who has lived in the Canadian Arctic for 10 plus years, interacting with the locals and elders, I can tell you polar bears are not only not endangered, there are also no delays in the forming of the polar sea ice. Scientifically speaking, polar bear numbers would increase with warming temperature trends and decrease with cooling temperature trends. So if we are being led to beleive that the poster child for global warming is decreasing in numbers, than we should also realize that that population would be doing so because of colder temperatures which would create thicker ice and make it harder to gain access to their favorite food which lives under that same ice. I apologize for ranting, but it is frustrating to see that the world is still flat in the minds of so many people.
